The Wallingford Steps, a wide concrete staircase, connect N 34th St. with N Northlake Way, the Burke-Gilman Trail, and Gas Works Park. The colorful and whimsical circular mosaic on the lowest landing brings you down to Gas Works Park and the north end of Lake Union.

The small park’s highlight is the brightly colored glass and etched-metal mosaic, “Pond“, by Benson Shaw and Clark Weigman. It features a fanciful marine motif and other shapes based on artwork by local school children.

Although Wallingford steps is small, the mosaic is larger than life and the influence of children on the artwork is apparent when kids start racing around the circles and checking out all of the little creative metal designs. This park is a great place to check out before or after a longer visit to Gas Works Park.
